Holi - Ayurvedic view
Dosha - Kapha and Pitta.
Holi comes as start of summer season (Vasant rutu)
In cold season (shishir rutu), kapha is accumulated in body.
In summer season (Vasant rutu), heat in the environment starts increasing. This increasing heat starts melting the Kapha in the body and gives rise to many kapha related diseases.
As well as due to rise in heat in environment, moisture and humidity increases, which gives rise to various infections.
Why fire in holi?
The holi fire is lit with cowdung cakes, camphor, stems of plants like neem, peepal, jowar,
wheat, etc. these things help in killing the bacteria in environment.
Hence purifying the air
and reducing infection causing elements.
As well as when you stay around the holy fire, the heat helps in liquifying the Kapha and the act of shouting and running helps in digesting this kapha.
Why ash in Holi?
On the day of Holi, the ash of the holi fire is played by throwing with each other.
This ash
which has antimicrobial and kapha reducing value, helps in reducing the infection.
Rangapanchmi
Rangapanchmi is the festival of colours. On this festive day people play with various colours by throwing them on each other in dry on mixed with water.
Now why should we play with colours?
Previously the colours where prepared from herbs like:
- Red colour with kumkum made from haldi, rose or hibiscus flowers.
- Green from neem and mehandi
- Yellow from haldi or turmeric
- Saffron from palash flowers.
- Brown from amla etc.
All these herbs help in reducing Kapha and increasing immunity.
These colours have different effects on our body made of panchabhoota.
The different colours are associated with different bhootas e.g. red for Agni bhoota, blue for akaash bhoota etc. Like modern day color therapy
